WLTI Live Bonus Point #3 – A Matter of National Unimportance

Barack Hussein Obama II, the 44th President of the United States of America, is coming for your game shows.

That is the inference made upon a recent petition set up on WhiteHouse.gov, the official website of our sitting commander-in-chief. The petition, the latest by-product of an experiment in open government gone horribly wrong, requests that the President not speak on matters of national or international importance between the hours of 11am and 12am, when CBS is airing that pillar of Americana for the last 40 years, “The Price Is Right”.

We could talk about the politics involved, from those who seemingly disagree with his very existence to those who don’t see game shows as anything more than light entertainment, but as I am not a political analyst nor do I care to be one, I’ll offer one plea to the unknown author of this proposal.

Quit while you’re behind.

First of all, President Obama is hardly the first sitting President to interrupt a regularly-scheduled television show in the course of American history, let alone the first sitting President to interrupt the long-running CBS franchise… LET ALONE the first PERSON to do either of these things. The Bush administration saw the attacks of 9/11 and the various responses kill at least one week of TV time. Bill Clinton had to break into television to answer for his crimes as well. As for Ronald Reagan? Three words: Iran-Contra hearings. And the less said about Desert Storm the better.

Second thing… certain sections of game show fandom are notoriously fickle with their worship to the point where life stops for that one hour. For that one hour, we are reduced to the children we were when we grew up watching the show (which would probably explain the colossal butthurt over Drew Carey/Mike Richards/anyone not named Bob Barker). For those people, it’s time for a come-to-Jesus meeting… it’s a TV show on a major network. The primary line, as with all shows, is the bottom line. And the bottom line is dollar signs. The show exists to make money for FremantleMedia and CBS, not to cook you a sandwich, do your laundry, or pleasure you in ways unbefitting this website.

it’s a good hour to spend if you can spend it. If you can’t, then just hop on the Internet and spend your hour there. You have the capability to address government for a redress of grievances, then you have the capability to play an hour long Flash video. And don’t pretend that you don’t. If you can somehow get less than one percent of the signatures needed for an official response from the White House, then you can use that energy for a more productive end. After all, all things, even TPIR, have to end. And at that end, the lunchtime news.

Yes we all should watch and embrace the things that make us feel good, like “The Price Is Right”. But if you have a problem dealing with the fact that reality doesn’t end at 11, then make no mistake, you’re the one with the problem.

And make no mistake, it’s your problem.

Now excuse me while I wait for you to address the Vatican for interrupting “Millionaire” due to the conclave.
